August J. (Pete) Peters, 74, widely known retired mail carrier, died Thursday night at 8:15 in his home, 2221 Vermont. He had been in failing health for a year.

Mr. Peter retired eight years ago after being a Quincy mail carrier for 44 years. Most of the time he was on Route 1 in the downtown business district.

Mr. Peters was born January 27, 1884 in Quincy, a son of Jacob and Emelia Rabe Peters. He was married to Miss Dorothy Lehbrink June 9, 1909. He was a member of Union Methodist Church, its Men’s Bible class and the National Association of Letter Carriers.

Surviving are the widow; a son, Kenneth Peters of Quincy; a daughter, Mrs. Allen Ligon of Warrensburg, Ill., three grandchildren, Mrs. Duane Hogge of Quincy, and Lynda and Betsy Ligon of Warrensburg. A daughter died in infancy and two sisters and two brothers also preceded him in death.
